The Nerazzurri fans have voted: Duván Zapata is the first Player of the Month of the 2021/22 season!
Despite missing the first two matches of the season to injury, Duván Zapata made his mark in the remaining Serie A and Champions League games, deservedly winning the ‘Player of the Month’ award for August and September.
The initiative that is once again sponsored by ItalianOptic, one of Atalanta’s Silver Sponsors, saw the Colombian triumph over José Luis Palomino after the usual poll and the final. The Argentine centre-back surely deserves to be mentioned, as he is a key player of the Atalanta defence and stood out as the footballer who recovered the most balls (77) in the first 7 matches of Serie A TIM.
However, it was difficult for José to beat Zapata. The Nerazzurri number 91 was involved in five goals (2 goals and 3 assists) in six matches played, as well as being a real reference point for the Atalanta attack.
Among all, the performances in the Champions League certainly stand out, in which Zapata provided two decisive assists (the first to Freuler in Villarreal, the second to Pessina for the winning goal against Young Boys), and the trip to Salerno, decided by Duván with fifteen minutes remaining.
Fun fact: Zapata was the first ItalianOptic Player of the Month also in 2019 and 2020… Hopefully, this is a good omen for the current season too!
Enhorabuena, Duván!
