Gasperini: “Great game, the players did great”

Inter-Atalanta gave endless emotions, from the 1st minute to the final whistle, with the teams not saving their energy and putting on a show, as confirmed by coach Gian Piero Gasperini: “Excellent game, the players were great”.

Is it one point won or two points dropped?

“I don’t know. It could have been zero or three. In the end, you have to settle for this point.”

It was a good game. There were turnarounds, it was exciting. We got everything in this match.

“Yes, I think that was the best thing, it was a wonderful match. Credit goes to all players, all of them did great. They put on a fine show in a crowded stadium, finally.”

Coach, Inter fired a penalty onto the crossbar. At the other end, Atalanta were a bit lucky earlier perhaps with that missed penalty, but then Piccoli’s goal was disallowed.

“There were alternating moments in the match. They had a really strong start and scored. We took some minutes to do that, but then we did well and we deservedly turned the game around in the first half. We got off to a very strong start in the second half and almost made it 3-1 more than once. Their changes caused problems for us, they were going fast and they created some opportunities, the equaliser and the missed penalty. Then in the final minutes, we had some big chances. It was a good match indeed.”

Has everyone satisfied you?

“Yes, undoubtedly. We gave everything. We also had some fatigue in the end, but they did well.”

Were you thinking about the Champions League and Wednesday’s match against Young Boys or not?

“No. You can’t think of other matches in these situations. Some things come to mind. Sometimes we got lucky at their best time. If we managed to hold out, there was a lot of space to counter. However, we struggled to hold out. Dimarco caused problems for us when he burst down the left twice as full-backs do. We should have blocked him earlier. Those became some dangerous goalscoring opportunities. Then Mario Pašalić blocked them well and we went on the counterattack.”

Now you can focus on Youn Boys. This is an important week for you: Inter, Young Boys and Milan.

“Yes. Today we’ll recover from the match. Then tomorrow we’ll do a bit more and we’ll think about Young Boys on Monday.”
