This weekend, Atalanta’s opponents in the 2021-2022 UEFA Champions League all took to the pitch in their respective leagues.
In Premier League, Manchester United edged past Wolverhampton away: Mason Greenwood was the only player on the scoresheet, assisted by Jadon Sancho. The English side are on 7 points on the table after 3 matches. Tottenham are top of the league just two points ahead.
In Super League, Young Boys drew 1-1 away to Basel. The Swiss side played the entire second half down to 10 men as Quentin Maceiras was sent off in the 43rd minute after receiving two yellow cards within a two-minute window (the first was for dissent, the second one for a foul). The Swiss have 5 points in the standings but played one game less than the 5 played by the other teams (Young Boys-Lugano on 21 August was in fact postponed). Zürich lead with 13 points.
On the other hand, the match between Atletico de Madrid and Villarreal, which rounded off the schedule of LaLiga matchday 3, ended 2-2. After two consecutive draws, Villarreal were winning 2-1 at the Spanish champions’ home. Luis Suarez had already equalized after the visitors’ lead to score through Manu Trigueros. Villarreal restored their lead through Arnaut Danjuma, but Aïssa Mandi’s own goal in full stoppages, in the 95th minute, defined the result of the match. Villarreal are on 3 points after 3 games.
Before the Champions League fixtures, all the teams will have to play one more round in their respective leagues: Manchester United- Newcastle United; Young Boys-FC Zürich and Villarreal-Deportivo Alaves.
